Meet Mr. Whimsey - Me! | | Joe Gerson | As a designer, scenic painter and greeting card originator, I have enjoyed a happy career as an artist. And with my art work I want to spread a little joy!As a graduate of Pennsylvania State University, I majored in art and participated in college drama groups, where I tried to utilize and sharpen my artistic and technical capabilities. It was during this time that I became interested in stage design. After graduating from Penn State in 1950, I embarked on a career of set designing for many summer theatres throughout the northeast. I designed scenery for both Proscenium and 'In the Round' theatres. Soon after, I moved to New York City where I furthered my studies at Columbia University and The Lester Polakov Studio and Forum of Stage Design. I took and passed an art examination for the United Scenic Artists Union. Then I became involved in scenic painting for the theatre, ABC and NBC television networks, many TV commercial sets and some movies. I also spent three years painting scenery at the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York City.
While painting commercially to support myself, I began to create my own paintings and have shown much of my work at several major art galleries and shopping malls throughout New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. To my great delight I won a first prize for a painting of my 'Conductor' whimsey at the Washington Square Outdoor Exhibit in New York City.
